Corporate Contingency Planning

Corporate Readiness

Emergency events are always come as you are - once the event unfolds you are either prepared or you are not!

Corporate Contingency Planning must address two priorities.

The first priority will be to care for the well being of the employees. A catastrophic disaster during business hours, may strand employees at work for days to weeks until roads are cleared for safe driving. If the office building suffers structural damage, employees may be forced to shelter outdoors and endure the elements. Electricity may be out for weeks leaving everyone in the dark and causing water treatment plants to stop working. There may also be injuries requiring medical attention when no emergency assistance will be available. Not only do you want to keep your employees safe, but also it is your responsibility to take measures to protect your employees from foreseeable dangers such as natural disasters. Failure to maintain standards of protection opens managers and officers to liability if losses or injuries occur because of their failure to act.

Once the immediate threat to personnel safety is over, the second priority will be to the well being of the business. Business survival may depend on the ability to maintain the essential employees at your business facility. Major storms like Katrina and Sandy showed that once employees left the business facility, many were unable to return. These events also showed that essential employees remained on the job at the business facility if resources were available to provide for their families.
